Ok. I’ll admit it. When Firefly came out, it was barely a blip on my radar. I really didn’t pay any attention to it, even though I’m a big sci-fi fan. It seemed really cheesy at first glance. People flying spaceships but still riding horses from town to town? A space western? Give me a break. I saw the trailer for Serenity this past summer, and I was in awe, because it actually looked good. The Sci-Fi Channel began playing Firefly every Friday night and my girlfriend and I started watching it in preparation for the movie, since Serenity is based on the TV series. It chronicles a captain and his rag-tag crew on their mostly illegal, sometimes crazy, always entertaining adventures through the universe. It is easily one of the best written science fiction shows I have ever seen. The movie did not disappoint, either. It was hilarious at times, serious at times, and very, very human in a way that you hardly ever see in sci-fi. After awhile, you’ll find that the characters really start to grow on you. I suggest that when it comes out, you pick it up and check it out if you haven’t seen it already. Actually, watch Firefly now, and then get Serenity on December 20th, 2005. It’s actually the first really good movie I’ve seen in a theatre this year, period.
