Lagunitas Freak Out Ale.
by Chris CoyierLagunitas Brewing Co., out of Petaluma, California, has a new beer out commemorating the 40th anniversery of the Frank Zappa album Freak Out! The beer comes in a large 1 pint 6 oz bottle and features the original cover of the album with permission from the Zappa Family Trust. It has a hoppy bite like a pale ale, but is flavorful and finishes smooth like a wheat or amber. I tend to be skeptical of special limited-run brews because I think in order for a brewery to be great, they need to stick with a few beers and work on making them perfect instead of jumping all over the map. I can’t complain in this case though, as I hear this is the type of beer Lagunitas excels at, and more importantly, is delicious. This is the first in a series of Zappa tribute beers. The beer will switch out every nine months or so on other major Zappa anniverseries like Absolutely Free, coming next summer.

This is a list of their distributors. Nothing in Canada, but it does say to give them a call if you are interested in having it in your area, might be worth a shot. You could also try contacting the Brewery itself. I found them to be extremely pleasant.

Frank Zappa sang “Dinah Moe Hum” on his KNEES to me in front of a packed auditorium at my college, back in the Seventies.
Most people can’t make that claim.
